As we navigate through the challenges posed by infectious diseases in our workplaces and communities, the power of knowledge and technology has never been more critical. This month, we shine a spotlight on an innovative ally in our ongoing battle against these invisible threats: Germicidal Ultraviolet (GUV) Technology.

As well, we will celebrate the launch of our newly developed Mpox awareness and prevention section on the Commit to C.A.R.E. website

Types of UV

UV-A

With wavelengths from 315 to 400 nm, is mainly linked to skin aging.

UV-B

Spanning 280 to 315 nm, can cause sunburn and, with long-term exposure, skin cancer.

UV-C (includes GUV)

Within UV-C’s spectrum (100 to 280 nm), is GUV (200 to 280 nm) which is effective in inactivating microorganisms, making it crucial for disinfection and infectious disease prevention.

Understanding GUV

What is GUV?

GUV is a particular type of ultraviolet light that can help reduce the number of airborne infectious disease particles. It consists of radiation with wavelengths between 200 and 280 nm, with 254 nm being the most effective.

UV-B

GUV works by emitting short-wavelength ultraviolet light, which damages the genetic material of microorganisms such as viruses, bacteria, and fungi. This damage either kills the microorganism or renders it unable to reproduce, reducing the concentration of these particles in the air.

UV-C (includes GUV)

  • As ceiling units in rooms.
  • In-air stream disinfection in central HVAC systems
  • In enclosed in-room air cleaners
